Claim Your
Good Now
by Paula Langguth Ryan
For six years, I lived in New York. During three of those years I worked on 34th
Street, two blocks from the Empire State Building. Month after month I'd tell
myself "one of these days, I'm going to visit the top of the Empire State
Building."
It was a long time goal, ever since I saw the movie "An Affair To
Remember." Yet it was a goal I never gave to myself. I justified my delayed
gratification, telling myself that I'd go "one of these days" -- when a friend
or relative came to visit who wanted to enjoy the view.
Somehow, of course, that day never came around and I left Manhattan
fifteen years ago, having never explored the city skyline from that famous
bird's eye view.
Last week, I was in Manhattan on business once again. One stop was on
34th Street. Leaving my appointment, I strode purposefully down the street,
mentally noting the Empire State Building lobby as I walked by. That familiar
sentiment crossed my mind once again: "One of these days, I'm going to..."
I stopped dead in my tracks as another voice inside simply stated, "why
not today?"
And so I did it. I went inside, paid my $9 and ascended to the top of the
Empire State Building where I could see in all directions for nearly 10 miles.
Simply by allowing myself to claim something I wanted for myself -- just for
myself -- I expanded my horizons exponentially. I did it for myself, all by
myself and have shared that experience with only two people until now.
This week, I encourage you to claim something that you've desired for
yourself. Do it by yourself. Savor the moment and share the impact of the
experience with only those people you feel absolutely compelled to share it
with. Don't diminish the experience by talking about it ad nauseam. Just do it.
Enjoy it. Live it and incorporate the experience into your horizons. And watch
how everything around you expands when you claim your good for yourself. You
deserve it.
Until next issue, I wish you peace and prosperity,
